The Ace of Spades has been used for centuries as symbol that people feared. It's not surprising that it was used by US soldiers. The solders of the 101st Airborne Division and 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment painted this symbol on their helmets for good luck and camaraderie during WWII. It was later used in the Vietnam War to frighten the Viet Cong soldiers. Saddam Hussein was placed on the Ace of Spades during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
